TUNIS, Tunisia — President Zine Abidine ben Ali, in a symbolic break with the 31-year rule of his predecessor, Habib Bourguiba, has renamed the political party that has governed Tunisia since independence.
The all-powerful Destourian Socialist Party, which holds all 125 seats in the National Assembly, will now be called the Constitutional Democratic Assembly, he announced over the weekend.
The name Destourian--Arabic for constitutional--was closely identified with Bourguiba, who was declared senile in November and replaced by Ben Ali.
