Tennis Roundup : Fitzgerald Gets Into Semifinals at Philadelphia

John Fitzgerald of Australia, seeded 16th, pulled off his second straight upset Friday night in the $600,000 U.S. Pro Indoor championships at Philadelphia.
Fitzgerald, who ousted top-seeded Ivan Lendl on Thursday, defeated ninth-seeded Kevin Curren, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the semifinals. Defending champion Tim Mayotte also advanced by defeating Jim Grabb, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
Earlier, Jorge Lozano of Mexico, a three-time All-American at USC, surprised 14th-seeded Dan Goldie, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, and sixth-seeded Christo van Rensburg of South Africa eliminated Sammy Giammalva, 7-6, 6-2.
Mayotte, who beat John McEnroe in last year’s final, faces Van Rensburg today. Fitzgerald meets Lozano.
At Fairfax, Va., top-seeded Martina Navratilova beat Zina Garrison, 6-1, 6-3, to gain the semifinals of the $300,000 Virginia Slims of Washington tournament against defending champion Hana Mandlikova.
Mandlikova, seeded fourth, defeated 16-year-old Natalia Svereva of the Soviet Union, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
