ZURICH, Switzerland — A restaurant fire, apparently ignited when an employee mistakingly poured flammable alcohol into a portable heater, swept through Zurich’s luxury high-rise International Hotel on Sunday, killing six people, a fire department spokesman said.
The fire broke out in the Panorama Grill on the 31st floor of the five-star hotel, in the Zurich-Oerlikon area between the city center and the nearby international airport.
About 180 hotel guests were evacuated into near subzero temperatures while firemen battled for 1 1/2 hours to bring the blaze under control. It was unknown whether the dead were guests or members of the staff, the spokesman said.
