Iran-Contra Inquiry Hears Testimony of Regan, Meese Aide

WASHINGTON — Former White House Chief of Staff Donald T. Regan and Assistant Atty. Gen. William Bradford Reynolds were questioned Wednesday by the grand jury investigating the Iran-Contra affair, officials said.
Both men were presumably questioned about the weekend investigation that Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III conducted in November, 1986, as the affair was unraveling.
That probe has been criticized by Congress for being incomplete and failing to prevent the destruction of key documents by National Security Council officials, who are now under investigation by independent counsel Lawrence E. Walsh.
Regan was present when President Reagan ordered Meese to conduct the investigation and later when the attorney general reported his findings.
Reynolds, head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division, was a member of the team that Meese assembled to question key participants in the affair.
