Local News in Brief : Mayor Won’t Run Again
- Share via
El Segundo Mayor Jack Siadek announced that he will not seek reelection in April because of his continuing fight with “the disease of alcoholism.”
Siadek said that he originally planned to cite “personal reasons” for his unexpected announcement but that he would have been a “miserable person” if he had not disclosed his problem.
“I would have known in my heart that I hadn’t told the truth,” he said. “My new life is based on self-esteem, self-worth and honesty with myself.”
The mayor said that he stopped drinking about a year ago, after five years as an alcoholic that took a toll on his life as a businessman, politician and family man.
Siadek, 47, was elected to the council in 1980 and was appointed mayor in 1986. He said he thought he could win reelection easily but had been devoting up to 50 hours a week to the mayor’s post and needed more time for his personal life.
