A Tie Gives Dynamo Kiev a Title : Soviet Soccer Team Scores Most Goals to Take Pacific Cup

A last-minute goal by Oleg Kuznetsov gave Dynamo Kiev of the Soviet Union a 1-1 tie with Bordeaux of France in the Pacific Cup soccer championship Sunday at the Coliseum.
Both teams finished with a 1-0-1 record, but Dynamo Kiev was awarded the championship over Bordeaux because it scored more goals in its two games. Dynamo Kiev defeated West German League leader FC Cologne, 3-0, and Bordeaux defeated Mexican champion Guadalajara, 2-1, Friday night.
Bordeaux led, 1-0, when Kuznetsov, Dynamo Kiev’s most valuable player, emerged from a pack of Bordeaux players and headed in a right-corner pass from Gennadi Yevtushenko, tying the match in the 44th minute of the second half.
In a scoreless first half, Dynamo Kiev’s conservative play put heavy pressure on its goalkeeper, Tshanov, as Bordeaux steadily attacked the Dynamo Kiev defense. Tshanov turned out to be a one-player defense, keeping the Soviet team in the match.
Throughout the match, Tshanov had a continual battle with right forward Jose Toure, Bordeaux’s most valuable player, who was the catalyst of the French team’s attack. Toure and company brought the crowd to their feet, forcing Tshanov to make one spectacular save after another.
Bordeaux did manage to score a goal in the 11th minute of the first half, but Jean Thouvenel’s header was taken away when he was called offsides on Bordeaux’s corner kick.
At the start of the second half, Bordeaux was again the more aggressive team. It finally scored in the 26th minute as Toure left-footed a goal past Tshanov from outside the front of the penalty area.
Dynamo Kiev then started to force the action. After two saves by Bordeaux goalkeeper Dominque Dropsy, Dynamo Kiev tied the score.
The goal was set up when Dynamo Kiev right forward Yevtushenko drove a high looping pass near the Bordeaux goal. Kuznetsov headed the ball in from 12 yards out.
In the second match of the doubleheader, FC Cologne, behind the brilliant play of its goalkeeper, Illgner, shut out crowd favorite Guadalajara, 1-0.
A second-half goal by right forward Haessler gave FC Cologne the victory as the Mexican team wasted numerous scoring opportunities. FC Cologne’s victory gave them third place in the tournament.
The tournament, drew more than 60,000 fans for the two dates.
