Sarah’s in the Royal Family Way
LONDON — It’s official! The Duke and Duchess of York are expecting their first baby in August, Buckingham Palace said today. The child will be fifth in line to the British throne.
As her pregnancy was announced, the 28-year-old duchess was taking a flying lesson in a helicopter based at a Royal Air Force facility in Oxfordshire. A palace spokesman said she was in “excellent health.”
Prince Andrew, second son of Queen Elizabeth II, and the former Sarah Ferguson were married July 23, 1986.
British newspapers have been speculating for two weeks that the duchess was pregnant. In that time, she traveled to Switzerland and to New York.
The palace spokesman said the duchess would continue public engagements until June, including a visit next month to Los Angeles where she and her 27-year-old husband are patrons of a British festival.
The baby will be the queen’s fifth grandchild. Prince Charles, heir to the throne, has two sons. The queen’s daughter, Princess Anne, has two children.
