Authorities are trying to determine whether 27,000 gallons of gasoline that spilled from a barge into Humboldt Bay killed any fish or clams or polluted shoreline areas. The Marine Logistics Corp. barge, bound from Seattle, was being towed into the bay when it struck a rock jetty and damaged a 3,500-barrel tank. The mishap angered those fighting proposed gas drilling off the North Coast, which will be the subject of a public hearing in Eureka on Feb. 1.
