Soccer : Kennedy Rallies to Tie Bolsa Grande After Shutout String Ends

After five consecutive shutouts, the Kennedy High School boys’ soccer team gave up three first-half goals Friday but rallied for a 3-3 tie with Bolsa Grande in a Garden Grove League match at Bolsa Grande.

Bolsa Grande (3-1-3 in the league) had a chance to win in the final minute, but Kennedy goalie Jack McConnell saved a penalty kick by Randy Reynaga. McConnell, who has seven shutouts for the season, made 12 saves.

Trailing, 3-0, the Fighting Irish (9-2-3, 6-0-1) had goals from Kyong Kim, Mike Laliberte and Mark Piening. Piening’s goal tied the score with five minutes remaining. Diego Abbes assisted on all three goals.

Bolsa Grande’s goals were scored by Reynaga (2) and Mark Miller.

Goalie Nacho Yogues made 15 saves for the Matadors.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 1, Esperanza 0--Chad Rodriguez scored 15 minutes into the second half for host Cypress (9-5-4, 1-1-3).

Katella 3, El Dorado 1--David Harty, Rich Henry and Al Flores scored for the Knights (9-1-6, 2-0-3). Larry Queen scored for the Golden Hawks (8-4-2, 3-1-1). Katella goalie Scott Bogardus made nine saves, and El Dorado’s Ken Scott had four.

Los Alamitos 1, Loara 0--Griffin Tony Blasing scored on an assist from Mauricio Ingrassia with 10 minutes left to play for host Los Alamitos (9-6-3, 2-2-1).

Goalie Brian Weiser had 15 saves for Loara (0-2-3 in league). Griffin goalie Eric Lange had six.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana 3, Santa Ana Valley 0--Rick Oseguera scored two goals and Abel Ventura one for host Santa Ana (4-7-4, 2-1-1). Gus Palsencia had eight saves for Santa Ana.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 5, Costa Mesa 0--Kevin Macare and Brian Fleming scored two goals each and Pat Richards scored the other for Laguna Hills (9-4-3, 4-2-2) at Costa Mesa. Kevin Casagranda had six saves for Laguna Hills.

Orange 1, Woodbridge 0--Val Gutierrez scored in the second half for the Panthers (9-3-3) at Orange. Orange goalies Tim Huhn and Traes Martin had four and five saves. Woodbridge goalie Mike Goodman had eight.

El Modena 2, Foothill 2--Randy Murrietta and Steve Vaez scored for El Modena (6-5-3, 0-2-2) at home. John McCarthy and Bob Bandon scored for Foothill (1-2-1 in the league).

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 2, El Toro 1--Eric Machado scored with five minutes left to give the Vaqueros (5-4-2, 2-1-1) the victory at El Toro. Keith Rosenberg also scored for Irvine, and goalie Shane Brosnan made 10 saves. Doug Berry scored for El Toro (0-2-2)

In the Sea View League:

Saddleback 3, Newport Harbor 0--Pedro Sawala, Carlos Sawala and Alex Rico scored for host Saddleback. Miguel Ochoa had eight saves for Saddleback, and Ken Willcut had six for Newport Harbor.

In girls’ Orange League play:

Anaheim 2, Orange Lutheran 1--Jenny Koebli scored both goals for Anaheim. Kathy Anderson scored for Orange Lutheran (1-5-3, 0-2-1).
