College Roundup : UCI’s Weichsel Advances to Third Round

Courtney Weichsel of UC Irvine won two matches Tuesday in the Women’s Intercollegiate Invitational Tennis Championships being played at the Riviera Tennis Club at Pacific Palisades.

Weichsel, a sophomore, defeated Paula Bennion of Cal State Long Beach, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round and Carolyn Tregoning of Alabama, 6-4, 6-0, in the second round. Weichsel will play in the third round at 9 a.m. today.

Kelly Goldborough, Stacy Cadigan and Haruko Shigekawa of UC Irvine were eliminated in the opening round.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

Cal State Long Beach 3, Chapman 0--Bob Jones had nine kills and Erich Schlitz eight for Chapman in the season opener for both teams at home.
