Local News in Brief : Coalition Against Lungren
- Share via
A coalition of Los Angeles political and civic leaders Monday called on the Legislature to reject the nomination of Rep. Daniel E. Lungren (R-Long Beach) as state treasurer.
Mayor Tom Bradley, Assemblyman Terry Friedman (D-Los Angeles) and leaders of the Asian communities were among those at a press conference held at the Airport Hyatt to oppose Gov. George Deukmejian’s nomination.
Lungren was criticized for his opposition to sanctions on South Africa for its apartheid policies, bilingual ballots and reparations for Japanese-Americans interned during World War II.
“He’s against everybody,” Bradley said, accusing Lungren of demonstrating “either insensitivity or hostility to issues of equal opportunity and injustice.”
The mayor, a Democrat, has twice run for governor against Deukmejian.
