Hundreds of South Korean youths clashed with riot squads after an emotional memorial service marking the first anniversary of a student’s death. More than 2,000 students from seven universities gathered at Seoul National University to honor Park Chong Chul, who died in police custody Jan. 14, 1987, after being tortured during questioning about dissident activity. Violent anti-government protests erupted after his death. During the two-hour service, demonstrators burned President-elect Roh Tae Woo in effigy and carried placards denouncing Roh’s election as “null and void.”
