Jetliner Loses Tail Cone During Dallas Landing

DALLAS —  The tail cone came off an American Airlines jet Wednesday, causing an emergency slide to be deployed during landing at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, an airline spokesman said.

None of the 14 passengers or six crew members were injured in the incident involving Flight 189 from Tulsa, Okla., to Dallas, spokesman Steve McGregor said. The plane is a McDonnell Douglas Super 80.

“Upon landing . . . the Fiberglas tail cone section of the plane literally came off, and an emergency slide was deployed,” McGregor said. “The tail cone section is made to be jettisoned from the plane in an emergency. Obviously, it wasn’t supposed to come off at that time.”
