COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Soldiers clashed Wednesday with a leftist group that ambushed them in a crowded southern market and eight people were killed, Sri Lankan military officials said.
Those killed included four civilians caught in the crossfire, a soldier and three members of the banned People’s Liberation Front, a Marxist political party of mostly Sinhalese youths. Ten others, including an unknown number of members of the front and a soldier, were wounded at the fair attended by about 2,000 villagers in Walasmulla, 100 miles from Colombo.
