Two American human rights activists attending an inquest into a Kenyan businessman’s death were removed by police from the courtroom and held for seven hours. Federal Judge Marvin Frankel, chairman of the U.S. Lawyers’ Assn. for Human Rights, and Dr. Robert H. Kirschner, the chief pathologist for Cook County, Ill., arrived Sunday to attend the inquest into the death of Peter Njenga Karanja, who died in police custody last February. International human rights activists say Karanja was tortured, an allegation the government denies. After the two Americans were released, Frankel said, “They questioned us about everything--why we were butting into Kenya’s business and spreading lies about them.”
