Southern California Gas Co. customers used a record amount of natural gas during December’s unseasonably cold weather, and could be in for a shock when their next gas bill arrives, gas company officials warned. Customers consumed 115 billion cubic feet of gas last month, breaking the previous record-high month of 107 billion cubic feet of gas set in January of last year. When customers consume more than 72 therms of gas a month in the winter, the charge per unit of gas nearly triples--to 95 cents per therm from 35 cents.
