Pay for directors of big corporations, which had been growing sharply, leveled off in 1987, the Conference Board business research group said in an annual study. The group said that although 42% of the 923 companies surveyed raised pay last year, the amount of increase failed to significantly increase the overall compensation in dollar terms when compared to 1986 levels. Median pay in non-financial service firms totaled $18,000 a year, unchanged from 1986. In financial firms, the total slipped to $17,000 from $17,200. Only the manufacturing sector showed an increase in directors’ pay, with the median figure totaling $22,000, compared to $21,000 in 1986.
