CARMEL VALLEY — Lennie Clements set a Carmel Valley Country Club course record Thursday with a nine-under-par 62 in the first round of the $250,000 Spalding Invitational tournament.
The San Diego golfer had a 31 on each nine as he broke the course record of 63 set by Bobby Clampett in 1981. Howard Clark of England was second with a five-under-par 65 at Carmel Valley Ranch.
Jan Stephenson, one of six women pros competing for prize money with the men, had a 67 to top the women. The women get distance advantages off the tees.
