Great Salt Lake Has Biggest One-Year Drop
Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY — The Great Salt Lake lost more volume in 1987 than in any previous year, the National Weather Service has reported.
The 80-mile-long, 30-mile-wide lake is at its lowest level since February, 1986, the service said. Its low for the year was reported at 4,209.35 feet above sea level.
The state began a $60-million pumping project to siphon excess water into Utah’s western desert after several years of rising water was blamed for more than $100 million in property damage.
