2 Marines Rescued From Mountainside
Two U.S. Marines were rescued from a chilly Angeles National Forest mountainside Saturday after they hiked into the wilderness area without any camping equipment, authorities said.
Brad Otto, 25, was stuck above the ground about 50 feet north of Mt. Wilson Toll Road Bridge until emergency personnel were able to reach him, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Roger Hom said.
Otto and Rick Sams, 21, had been spotted by a resident who called authorities about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Otto was rescued about 5 p.m. while Sams was able to reach safety by himself, Hom said.
“They were checked by paramedics at the scene and they were OK,” Hom said.
Hom said the men, stationed at the Camp Pendletom Marine Corps base in San Diego County, were “free climbing” when a concerned resident called.
The area is in Eaton Canyon Park outside Pasadena, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
