Abomb, apparently planted as part of an extortion attempt, exploded beneath a car in Woodland Hills on Friday as the auto’s owner tried to start it, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.
The explosion, which occurred about 1 p.m. in a carport of an apartment complex in the 5500 block of Canoga Avenue, caused no injuries but did minor damage to the car’s transmission, Detective Frank Dipaola said.
The owner’s name was not made public. Detectives would not say why they suspect extortion.
Twelve firefighters and the LAPD bomb squad responded, but there was no fire and no other explosives were found, Dipaola said. The LAPD’s Criminal Conspiracy Unit was investigating.
