Fire Guts Otay Mesa House

Children playing with matches in a home near Otay Mesa on Friday caused a fire that gutted the house, causing an estimated $70,000 in damages but no injuries.
San Diego Fire Department spokeswoman Ida Cheney said the fire broke out at 11:45 a.m. in the rear of the home of Peterlynn Way. Seven children and their grandmother were in the house at the time but all escaped safely, Cheney said.
It took 25 firefighters to bring the flames under control, Cheney said. An investigation by the Metro Arson Strike Team determined that children playing with matches in a back bedroom started the fire.
