Miller Barber and Nancy Lopez combined for their second straight 8-under-par 63 Sunday for a 54-hole record total of 191 to win the Mazda Champions golf tournament.

The winners divided $500,000 of the $850,000 purse.

Arnold Palmer and Colleen Walker, who led Barber and Lopez by one stroke after the second round, finished second with a final-round 67 for a 194 total.

Next were Orville Moody and Jan Stephenson and Bruce Crampton and Betsy King, each at 196.

Barber had three birdies and Lopez two as they combined for five birdies on the first five holes.

At the par-4 ninth hole, Palmer and Walker each shot a double bogey, while the winning team shot par to finish the front nine at 18-under.

“We didn’t make a bogey all tournament, then a double bogey cost us the tournament,” Palmer said. “One hole jumped up and grabbed us. It was devastating. All Barber and Lopez had to do the rest of the way was make sure it didn’t happen to them.”
