Florida Official Will Allow Hart on Ballot
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A day after vowing to keep Gary Hart’s name off the Florida primary ballot, the chairman of the state Democratic Party said he has changed his mind.
“At first I felt a little disappointed and amazed that (former Colorado) Sen. Hart would try to get back on the ballot. But after giving it some thought I don’t think that I would want to support not putting him on the ballot if we think he’s a viable candidate,” party Chairman Charles A. Whitehead told CBS Radio on Saturday.
The about-face on the ballot issue followed Whitehead’s comments in which he called Hart’s decision to re-enter the race “an absolute disgrace.”
After Texas, Florida is the top prize among the Southern states holding primaries on Super Tuesday, March 8.
