Two North County residents were injured Sunday when their single-engine Cessna crashed at Fallbrook Community Air Park.
Diane Moores of Valley Center and Mike Bolduc of Escondido, ages unknown, were injured shortly after 3 p.m. when their plane hit the ground and flipped over.
The pair, owners of Satellites West, a television satellite dish business in Fallbrook, were reported in serious condition at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. Moores was undergoing surgery, hospital officials said.
The tail of the plane snapped off and the fuselage ruptured.
Yvonne Aberle, operator of the airport, said the accident occurred as Bolduc, the pilot, tried to pull away from an attempted landing when he saw another plane coming toward his.
“He didn’t realize we had changed the landing direction because of a wind shift that occurred after he took off, 30 to 45 minutes earlier,” Aberle said. “Pilots don’t have to contact us, but they should. This accident should never have happened.”
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board have launched an inquiry into the crash.
