Westwood : 13 Fulbright Awards to UCLA

UCLA ranked third in the nation in the total number of Fulbright Awards given to scholars for 1987-88, university officials announced.

UCLA scholars received 13 of the 984 awards granted. Indiana University had 17 and the University of Wisconsin at Madison had 15. UCLA received the most Fulbrights among the nine University of California campuses.

Fulbright winners work for one year in more than 100 foreign countries conducting research or lecturing.

The award winners at UCLA are Edward Abraham, assistant professor in the department of medicine and emergency medicine; Kathleen Balgley, lecturer in UCLA Writing Programs; Norma Feshbach, professor of education; Thomas Hudson, research assistant in the department of teaching English as a second language/applied linguistics; Kenneth Karst, professor of law; Oscar Marti, acting assistant director of the UCLA French Revolution Bicentennial Program, and Nora Nixon, instructor at UCLA Extension;

Also receiving Fulbrights were Jorge Preloran, professor in the department of theater, film and television; Heidi Riggenbach, instructor in the department of teaching English as a second language/applied linguistics; Jose Pedro Segundo, professor of anatomy; Ali Shabaik, professor in the department of materials science and engineering, and David Shapiro, professor of psychiatry and bio-behavioral sciences.
