Freshman Deena Drossin of Agoura High placed 11th in the Kinney national cross-country championships Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego.
Drossin, the state Division I champion, ran 17 minutes, 50.9 seconds over the 5,000-meter course.
Hometown favorite Kira Jorgensen of Rancho Buena Vista High in Vista won in 17:08.7.
Drossin was in seventh place midway through the race.
“It looked like she just ran out of gas,” Kinney promoter Al Franken said. “She just couldn’t hold off some of the girls in the last half-mile.”
Drossin’s was the second-best effort among freshmen. Sarah Schwald of Liberty High in Colorado Springs, Colo., placed fourth in 17:27.8.
