TEHACHAPI — Carpinteria High School’s Emilio Handall is 5 feet 3 inches and weighs only 143 pounds, but he was the biggest man on the field Saturday night.
Handall rushed for 63 yards in 10 carries, had 74 yards on 2 punt returns and scored 3 touchdowns to lead Carpinteria to a 27-0 victory over Tehachapi before a crowd of about 4,000 at Coy Burnett Stadium.
With the aid of a defense that registered its eighth shutout of the season--two in the playoffs--No. 1-seeded Carpinteria won the CIF Southern Section Inland Conference championship after losing the title last season on a field goal.
Carpinteria, the Tri-Valley League champion, which finished the season with a 14-0 record, showed it was intent on coming away with a championship from the start, driving 66 yards in 9 plays for a score after taking the opening kickoff.
Handall ran four yards for a touchdown with 8:18 left in the first quarter.
He scored again late in the second quarter on a 43-yard punt return.
Carpinteria opened a 21-0 lead near the end of the second quarter when quarterback Coley Candaele threw a 15-yard pass to Shad Lara. Handall added the two-point conversion and closed out the scoring on a seven-yard run late in the third quarter.
