Reagan Gives Iran-Arms Probe Replies

WASHINGTON — President Reagan has submitted written answers to questions submitted in the Iran-Contra investigation by independent counsel Lawrence E. Walsh, the White House said Thursday.
While confirming that the replies had been delivered, White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater refused to discuss the material, saying it was covered by grand jury secrecy rules.
He said Reagan’s statements amounted to sworn testimony.
Walsh is investigating the role of former White House aides Lt. Col. Oliver L. North and Rear Adm. John M. Poindexter and others in the diversion of profits from the Iran arms sales to the rebels in Nicaragua.
North has told Congress he assumed Poindexter, his boss, had told Reagan about the diversion. Poindexter said he did not inform Reagan but assumed the President would have approved it had he been informed.
