The Canadian government announced a $4.1-billion national day care program for 200,000 children over the next seven years. Health Minister Jake Epp said that $2.8 billion of the funds will be spent on nonprofit day care facilities in Canada’s 10 provinces, with the federal government picking up 75% of the costs and provinces covering the remainder. Another $76 million will be set aside for pilot projects such as rural day care, and the rest of the money is slated for tax deductions and credits. Epp said there would be a new $76-a-year tax credit for parents raising children at home, while tax deductions for children 4 to 6 will be doubled from $1,520 to $3,040.
