Travel Town, a Griffith Park display case for locomotives, cabooses, streetcars, horse-drawn drays, airplanes and cars, will celebrate its 35th anniversary Dec. 14.
Dedicated in 1952 as a gift to the children of Los Angeles, Travel Town began as an idea by Charley Atkins, a City Recreation and Parks Department employee. Atkins suggested a hands-on playground around one surplus locomotive. The facility has grown into one of the largest collections of antique transportation in the West.
