Don Mattingly will become one of the highest-paid major league players for the next three years, earning $6.7 million in 1988-90, under terms of a contract he is about to sign with the New York Yankees.
“We’re still working on the language--things like the fact I can’t play basketball and I can’t play football,” the first baseman said. “The one thing I’m trying to have left is to play racquetball.”
George Steinbrenner, the Yankees’ outspoken owner, was quoted as saying he was not happy about Mattingly’s request to play racquetball.
“He’s not going to play racquetball while he’s playing for me,” Steinbrenner said.
