Local News in Brief : Grant for Drug Education

About 25,000 schoolchildren will participate in an anti-drug program because of a $300,000 grant given Tuesday by the Ralphs Grocery Co. to the Southland’s DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program, officials announced.
Byron Allumbaugh, Ralphs chairman and chief executive officer, presented a check to Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates, originator of the anti-drug program. It was the first of several contributions Ralphs will make to the DARE program during the next three years, officials said.
The grant will provide funds to take the program curriculum into hundreds of additional schools throughout Southern California.
DARE puts local police departments together with Southland school districts in a joint campaign to teach elementary schoolchildren how to resist pressure to experiment with drugs and alcohol. It consists of a 17-week series of classroom lessons taught by veteran police officers.
