Checkpoints

I see where Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp is worried about endangering “the constitutional rights of the people being stopped” at sobriety checkpoints (Part I, Nov. 17). Shall we spread the news? When a person is stopped, questioned and searched without probable cause his constitutional rights have been eliminated, not endangered. Suspending the Constitution in an attempt to solve a social problem is like using an atom bomb to rid the inner city of rats.
