“801 Live.” EG/Jem. One of the many great things about CDs is that they revive albums that don’t deserve their current obscurity. A 1976 collaboration between some of the most inventive avant-garde/pop musicians of the ‘70s, 801 was represented on record only by this superb live album. The guiding forces here are Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera, and the band--also including Francis Monkman, Simon Phillips, Bill MacCormick and Lloyd Watson--does renditions of several of their songs that meet or beat the studio versions. The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” and the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” are also among the songs that get 801’s brilliantly bent touch. *** 1/2
