Wife of Chinese U.N. Diplomat Hit by Van in N.Y.; Driver Held
NEW YORK — The wife of the Chinese deputy ambassador to the United Nations was struck and critically injured by a van whose driver, Rafael Martinez, fled the scene but was later arrested on charges of drunk driving, police said today.
Chen Zhaokang, 58, was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital after the Sunday night accident. She is the wife of Deputy Ambassador Huang Jiahua.
Hospital officials said she is in critical condition and is suffering from multiple injuries.
Police said she was crossing Broadway in Manhattan with her son when she was hit by the van. The boy was not injured.
The driver of the van slowed briefly but then sped off, police spokesman Hugh Barry said. He said several witnesses saw the accident and took the license plate number of the 1973 Dodge van.
