Dissonant Reaction

Having enjoyed tremendously the San Diego Chamber Orchestra concert at Sherwood Auditorium on Nov. 9, I was astonished to read the review by Ken Herman in The Times of Nov. 11.

Judging by the audience reaction--standing ovation for the soloist and delighted reception for the Barber and Haydn--I am certain that most of the audience had the same reaction as I did. I thought it was a splendid, well-balanced concert with spectacular highs. The Barber was so poignantly done that the hall was hushed and reverent. If there was a “low,” it was the Haydn, but on the whole--it was a brilliant, memorable evening of music.

Won’t you try to help us build a comparatively new orchestra into what we all know it can be? We need to have criticism, certainly--but this review went beyond anything I have ever seen, verging on a personal attack on the conductor.

Let’s try to get more people to attend concerts and experience the joy of music--not tell them to stay away. The audience had a wonderful time. I’m so sorry your reviewer didn’t.
