The usual six West Coast powers are in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. water polo tournament starting today at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, but Stanford, which has won the title two straight years, is not the favorite.
The No. 1-seeded team is California (23-3), followed by USC (20-7), UCLA (24-8), Stanford (19-7), UC Irvine (18-8), Pepperdine (18-15), Navy (20-10) and Brown (15-8).
“Any team in the top six has an equal opportunity,” USC Coach John Williams said.
Cal will play Brown at 3 p.m., followed by USC-Navy at 4:30, UCLA-Pepperdine at 6 and Stanford-Irvine at 7:30.
The tournament continues Saturday, and the championship game will be played Sunday at 7:30 p.m..
