Dwight Gooden is considering leaving the New York Mets as a free agent after the 1990 season unless they sign him to a multiyear contract this year, according to the New York Post.

Gooden, who earned $1.5 million last season, said he has asked his agent, Jim Neader, to seek a three-year contract when he meets with Met Vice President Al Harazin in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Harazin told the newspaper it is unlikely the club will agree to a multiyear deal. “I’d say a long-term deal is a long shot in Dwight’s case,” Harazin said.
