Six U.S. senators are urging the U.N. Environmental Program to convene emergency international meetings to respond to scientific findings that chemicals are causing ozone loss over the Antarctic. In a letter to the Nairobi-based U.N. program, the senators urged that scientists meet within six months to consider data obtained by U.S. researchers showing that the hole in the ozone layer over the frigid continent has grown larger this year. The U.N. agency was instrumental in bringing industrialized nations together for negotiations that led to an agreement in September for a global reduction in the production of chlorofluorocarbons.
