South Africa said its troops were deployed up to 150 miles inside Angola as part of a joint operation with rebel forces that killed more than 3,600 Angolan government soldiers. At a briefing for South African military correspondents, officials disclosed new details about South Africa’s recent moves in Angola. According to the briefing, Angolan forces also lost more than 200 tanks and armored vehicles, six warplanes and seven helicopters. Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said last week that South Africa has more than 3,000 troops in his country and 30,000 along its southern border.
