The Olympic flame, lit from the sun’s rays in a ceremony among the ruins of an ancient temple in Olympia, Greece, will begin its journey today to Calgary, Canada, site of the Winter Games.
Enclosed in three Canadian miners’ lamps, the flame will be relayed by plane to Athens airport and by 19 Greek runners to the city center. It will be flown by jet to Newfoundland, Canada’s easternmost point, on Tuesday.
The flame kindled at the site of the original Olympics will take 99 days to travel across Canada to Calgary where the Games begin Feb. 13.
