The traditional practice of apprenticeship in the folk arts is being encouraged under a new program by the California Arts Council. Known as the Master-Apprentice Grants, the project will underwrite selected master-apprentice partnerships by paying for the master artist’s supplies and the apprentice’s fees and travel costs.
Application deadline is Jan. 15 and forms can be ordered from the California Arts Council in Sacramento. (The Arts Council defines folk arts as “a community-based expression in craft, music, dance, ritual, etc., which is shared within ethnic, family, occupational, regional or religious groups.”)
