Painted either black or manila, Serge Spitzer’s canvases offer modular groupings, perches and red rubber shock absorbers. Titled “About Sculpture,” they open boundless new horizons for designer Minimalism.

Other works by the Romanian-born artist are aggressively three-dimensional. In “About Sculpture 4,” a steel I-beam bent into a circle that embraces 36 feet of gallery floor rests on a single film can and supports a pile of plugs of concrete and grungy little military ration cans. This tableau of instability may be intended to suggest the shaky moral foundations of the military-industrial complex. But, like most big-scale Eurosculpture, Spitzer’s stuff appears to be muttering theories to itself instead of holding a conversation with the viewer. (Burnett Miller Gallery, 964 N. La Brea Ave., to Dec. 5.)
