CAMPAIGN ’88 : Jackson on Oil and War

Democratic presidential aspirant Jesse Jackson says the United States has become too dependent on foreign fuel supplies and has let that dependence dictate military activities in volatile international areas such as the Persian Gulf.
In remarks at Tulsa International Airport Tuesday, he argued that dependence on imported oil has resulted in unnecessary U.S. military involvement worldwide, as in reflagging Kuwaiti tankers and escorting them through the Persian Gulf.
Foreign Oil Dependency
“We’ve become overdependent on foreign oil and that makes us militarily dependent,” he said.
Jackson said he intends to push for a Western energy alliance that would negate the need for Middle Eastern oil supplies. Oklahoma is important in that effort because of its large contribution to domestic oil and gas supplies, he said.
