Israel ordered the closure of an Arab-owned news office in the occupied West Bank for two years, alleging that the bureau has maintained illegal ties with the Palestine Liberation Organization, the military command said. The action was the toughest crackdown on Palestinian news media since the temporary closure of two anti-Israeli newspapers a year ago. The newly closed office, in the West Bank city of Nablus, was owned by a free-lance reporter who supplied news for the Arabic language newspaper Al Quds in Jerusalem. The reporter has been imprisoned since April on charges of “membership in an illegal organization.”
