Gov. Orr Won’t Proclaim Sex Education Month

LINCOLN, Neb. — Gov. Kay A. Orr has turned down a request to designate October as “National Family Sexuality Education Month” to help publicize the role of parents in sex education, the group that sought the designation said.
In a letter to Planned Parenthood of Lincoln, Orr said: “A governor’s proclamation would not be the appropriate manner to address the personal aspects of family sexuality education.”
Former Gov. Bob Kerrey signed similar proclamations when he was governor, and a spokesman for Planned Parenthood said National Family Sexuality Education Month has been observed since 1975.
