Members of Congress will be allowed to visit Tibet, providing that their tour is for the “sole purpose” of promoting U.S.-Chinese friendship and that it comes at a convenient time, the Chinese Embassy in Washington said. California Rep. Tom Lantos (D-San Mateo) has announced plans to organize a congressional fact-finding mission to examine human rights in Tibet, where violent protests against Chinese rule have broken out. In commenting on the plan, embassy press officer Zhang Chiwei asserted, “The affairs of Tibet are entirely China’s internal affair.”
