Former U.S. District Judge Harry E. Claiborne, the first sitting federal judge to be removed from office in half a century, was released from a federal halfway house in North Las Vegas, Nev., after serving 17 months of a two-year term for tax evasion. Claiborne, 70, was removed from the bench in 1986 after a historic trial before the Senate after impeachment by the House as a result of his 1984 tax evasion conviction. Claiborne went to a downtown law office where he has been working since he was transferred from the federal prison camp at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala.
