Sweden’s government said it will decommission the first of its 12 nuclear reactors by 1995 as a first step toward scrapping the entire network. Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson told the opening session of Parliament that the ruling Social Democrats proposed closing a second reactor by 1996. The remaining 10 would go by the year 2010. Carlsson announced the timetable as part of a major environmental program, which also included proposals to counteract air pollution and acid rain and to deal with stores of poisons. Swedes voted in a 1980 referendum to scrap all 12 reactors at the country’s four nuclear power stations by the year 2010. Sweden generates about 50% of its power from nuclear energy.
